With the Anthropocene, humans have become a decisive force in the global ecosystem. And this goes far beyond what we call the environment. Human activity has long been leaving indelible traces inside our own bodies, too. Just how explosive this issue is became clear, among other things, at the (ultimately unsuccessful) 2025 plastics summit in Geneva: nanoplastics in the brain are turning us into something we don’t yet understand.
Taking this latest narcissistic wound to humanity as their starting point, Augst and Fühner trace a path from the excitement surrounding the pop-infused plastic world of the 1960s to Chinese warfare in the 17th century, Roland Barthes’s Mythologies, and the emergence of cyborgs. In doing so, they continue to develop a format somewhere between lecture, performance and concert, first presented in 2024 at the FLAB Festival in Ichthyosaurus Brecht, a SoundEssay produced by Mousonturm.
