Elina Juopperi, our current residency artist from Helsinki, will talk about her artistic practice and provide insight into her recent projects.
Elina Juopperi has a cross-disciplinary approach combining together various working methods such as photography and video production as well as text- and object-based installations, performative acts and artist books. By installing together various works she creates site-specific installations that – through strong spatial experiences –emphasise perception as an act of seeing. Thereby traditional concepts of objectivity and materiality are confronted with the subjectivity of experience. Juopperi exploits "camera sight" for highly metaphorical aims: her works are sort of mental landscapes in which untouched nature, symbols of cultural artefacts and technology are intertwined with world news.
Juopperi studied fine art in France and holds her DNSEP from École National Supérieure d’Arts Paris-Cergy. Grewn up and being from Lapland Juopperi emphasises the importance to work in her own backyard. Her work has been exhibited in venues like Siida Sami museum, Arte Alameda Mexico, La Galerie Noisy-le-Sec or Arte Actual Flacso Quito. She has received numerous grants from the state of Finland and private foundations.
The artist talk will take place in English at basis reading room, Gutleutstraße 8-12.
