Graubereich by Seokwoo Song
Opnening: September 18, 2025, at 6 p.m.
We cordially invite you to the opening of Seokwoo Song's exhibition Graubereich (Grey Area) on 18 September at 6 p.m. The works were created during his residency at basis e.V. as part of the AIR_Frankfurt programme in collaboration with the MMCA Residency Goyang in Korea.
I conceive of society as a dynamic force that both suppresses and affirms individual identity. Beginning with fragments of life experienced by Korean youth, my practice has expanded through my residency in Frankfurt. The city’s everyday scenes—homelessness, migration, discrimination—emerge not merely as urban backdrops but as structural symptoms of our time. Through staged configurations of figures, objects, and gestures, my work seeks to render these conditions visible. Ultimately, this exhibition traces the imprints of individuals to explore the aesthetic landscape of isolation, alienation, and collective experience in contemporary society.
Seokwoo Song (b.1993, KR) received his M.F.A. in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts, Korea National University of Arts, Seoul. His major solo exhibitions include Graubereich and To give names to those who have never had names. He has also participated in numerous international biennales such as the Daegu Photo Biennale, Singapore International Photography Biennale, and Krasnoyarsk Biennale, as well as group exhibitions at institutions including the National Museum of Finland, Novosibirsk State Art Museum, Griffin Museum of Photography,
Incheon Art Platform, Goyang Aram Museum of Art, Cheonan Museum of Art, Artspace3, and WESS.
Song has received several recognitions, including the Visual Arts Creative Preparation Grant from the Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation (Korea, 2024), CRITICAL MASS TOP 50 (USA, 2022), selection for the main exhibition of the 8th Singapore International Photography Biennale (Singapore, 2022), and the 18th Korea Photography Criticism Award (Korea, 2021). His works are held in the collections of Photographic Center Northwest, Zentrum für kulturelle Teilhabe Baden-Württemberg, and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. In 2025, he was selected as a resident artist at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Residency Goyang.
