We warmly invite you to the opening of the exhibition “Bilingual without a Mother Tongue” by Kwantaeck Park on September 24 at 6 pm.

Bilingual without a Mother Tongue considers the longstanding issue of the boundary between painting and sculpture through the consciousness and attitude of the artist who poses the question. Borrowed from the act of speaking two languages, the exhibition’s title points not to the bounded categories of medium but to the dual impulses and habits that emerge unpredictably in the creative process. The exhibition is also an inquiry into a creative self that cannot fully settle into the role of painter, sculptor, photographer, or performer—and for whom none of these can therefore readily be called a mother tongue.

The exhibition examines the two acts of drawing and making, which frequently intersect in the working process, as analogous to speaking two languages at once. Both take place through an awareness of the relationship between image and materiality, yet each assumes different structures and implications within the distinct conditions of the surface and object . Through the media of painting and sculpture, and the intertwined acts of drawing and making, Bilingual without a Mother Tongue explores the fundamental question of the language in which an artist thinks, and how that language is spoken.

The three-month residency in Frankfurt is a cooperation with MMCA Residency Goyang, Seoul.
