In his films and installations Pablo Pijnappel explores individual biographies and collective memory. By combining images and text, his artistic works bring reality and fiction together in a single narrative strand for which he makes use of both found images and photographs from the family archive.
That said, Pijnappel’s artistic interest is not only in his own biography and those of his social circle, he also reflects on the nature of human relationships and the discrepancy between memory and reality. In his pieces we also find questions of the individual’s social and cultural roots voiced. His critical inquiry into his own identity appears here as the leitmotif forming the center around which his oeuvre revolves and evolves. By connecting private image sources and appropriated sequences from mainstream movies Pijnappel’s work reflects on models of memory and the genesis of cultural identities in the context of visual experience today.
Pablo Pijnappel (born in 1979 in Paris) lives in Amsterdam and Berlin. His works have been in countless international group and solo shows.
