We cordially invite you to Hillel Roman’s opening performance Crossing\Drifting September 10 at 5 p.m.
Hillel Roman is based in Tel-Aviv, his works deal with various aspects of the political, visual and technological order and their interconnectedness. His practice searches for the connection between the universal and the local, and consists of charcoal drawings, large-scale participatory constructions, and the invention of futile machines.
Crossing\Drifting is a sculptural performative piece with focus on a two-person canoe hand-built by the artist. Roman, unfamiliar with boat building at first, followed blueprints found online to construct the piece over the course of his residency at basis. As a communal vehicle for the basis community, the canoe opens a platform for future explorations of the world and the mind through dialogue.
As part of the project, a parade will escort the canoe from basis e.V. to the launch’s location at the Main. With one participant at a time, the artist will paddle shore to shore while discussing the personal and metaphorical meaning of the crossing.
The work was realized in the framework of the AIR_Frankfurt residency program from July to August 2025 and will be publicly accessible as part of the basis-community in the future. From September 11 to September 15 the work will be exhibited in the mezzanine exhibition spaces at basis Gutleutstraße.
The three-month residency in Frankfurt is a cooperation with Artport, Tel Aviv.
